|
Korea will be hosting the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu – this is the second time the country has hosted a World Expo, with Daejeon hosting the event in 1993. It will be held for three months from May 12 to August 12, 2012 in the city of Yeosu, which is located in the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. Currently 93 countries and seven international organisations including the United Nation and the OECD have confirmed participation at the Expo. The 2012 Expo is expected to address international issues related to oceans and climate change under the main theme of ‘The Living Ocean and Coast’. It is designed to promote knowledge and advancement of technology concerning the ocean and coast and identify resolutions for challenges facing the ocean. The main theme is further divided into three sub-themes to deliver the object of the Expo in more effective and productive ways: Development and Preservation of the Ocean and Coast, New Resources Technology, and Creative Marine Activities. One of the sub-themes, Development and Preservation of the Ocean and Coast aims to inspire a new level of cooperation in the international community in the wake of realising that marine resources are limited. This particular concept of the Expo is expected to create a global paradigm for the sustainable use of marine resources. |
“A wide collection of art, including poetry, novels, films, musicals and music with marinerelated concept will be also exhibited at the Expo”
New Resources Technology is a marine technology focused theme. Its plan is based on the belief that the discreet use of resources is possible only if there is ongoing development of marine science and technology.
The third sub theme, Creative Maritime Activities, intends to establish and expand the relationship between the oceans and humankind through a form of culture and art. It will take part in the Expo as a fun and active experience for all generations, especially inspiring young children to learn to appreciate the oceans. A wide collection of art, including poetry, novels, films, musicals and music with marine-related concept will be also exhibited at the Expo.
With the natural beauty of the Expo site around the new port area, the 2012 Yeosu Expo is preparing to bring people and oceans in harmony to achieve green growth for our future.
